Former Congressman Bill Sali endorsed Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Eagle, Friday in his race for Sali’s old seat in Congress. Sali said he didn’t tell Labrador about the endorsement before a Friday news conference at the Idaho Capitol. Sali said he won’t be running for Congress, but didn’t rule out seeking another office.

Sali said he’s backing Labrador in part because of the state representative’s experience in Boise as a legislator. “It takes a person who’s been there, who knows what it’s like to cast a tough vote,” Sali said. “Raul’s got some experience doing that.” Vaughn Ward, another candidate in the Republican primary, has not held elected office. Sali said he respects Ward’s military experience and has a bright political future, but that sending him to Washington, D.C., would be like sending a Boy Scout to Iraq.

IdahoReporter.com has video of Labrador’s reaction to the endorsement from Sali.

  1. Lauri says:

I am disappointed that Sali endorsed Raul Labrador. Raul Labrador is a nice guy and does a great job in Idaho’s local politics BUT he is not strong on endorsing Illegal Immigration. He will NOT support Anchor Baby legislation H.R. 1868 or Chain Migration HR 878. In fact, his position is the SAME as Walt Minnick’s on Immigration – they all call for enforcement. When Raul comes to your area, ask him specific questions on Immigration.

Illegal Immigration in Idaho affects our Health, Education, Welfare and Corrections budgets. If the incentive is removed for Illegals to come to this country – they will leave.

  2. [...] It grew out of this event during the candidate filing period, when former 1st District Representative Bill Sali showed up at the Idaho Statehouse not to file for election (which had been speculated in some quarters) but to endorse a candidate, fellow Republican Raul Labrador. The other major Republican contender in the 1st (which is now held by Democrat Walt Minnick, who defeated Sali in 2008) is former congressional staffer Vaughn Ward, who also served in the military in the Middle East. 3. [...] The endorsement comes from Idaho County Commissioner Skip Brandt, who ran for the same seat in a six-way primary in 2006 when it was vacated by then-Rep. Butch Otter, who left to run for governor.  Brandt failed in his bid secure the seat when Republican Bill Sali won the race with 26 percent of the vote.  (See who Sali endorsed in the 2010 race here) [...]
